Grade 2, Operations

Fact families to 20

Three numbers, four facts: see how addition and subtraction fit together.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Totals to 10
Each family uses the same three numbers. Write the missing numbers.
Level 2: Totals to 20
Each family uses the same three numbers. Write the missing numbers.
Level 3: Blanks anywhere
Each family uses the same three numbers. Write the missing numbers.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Totals to 10

3 + 4 = 7 4 + 3 = 7 7 − 4 = 3 7 − 3 = 4

  1. The family is 3, 4 and 7, because 3 + 4 = 7.
  2. Turn the parts around: 4 + 3 = 7.
  3. Take away a part: 7 − 4 = 3 and 7 − 3 = 4.

Level 2: Totals to 20

9 + 4 = 13 4 + 9 = 13 13 − 4 = 9 13 − 9 = 4

  1. Make 10: split 4 into 1 and 3. 9 + 1 = 10 and 10 + 3 = 13. The family is 4, 9 and 13.
  2. Turn the parts around: 4 + 9 = 13.
  3. Take away a part: 13 − 4 = 9 and 13 − 9 = 4.

Level 3: Blanks anywhere

6 + 9 = 15 9 + 6 = 15 15 − 9 = 6 15 − 6 = 9

  1. The first fact shows 9 and 15. The missing part is 15 − 9 = 6.
  2. So the family is 6, 9 and 15, and 9 + 6 = 15.
  3. Take away a part: 15 − 9 = 6 and 15 − 6 = 9.
