Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Halves, thirds and quarters
What fraction of the shape is shaded? Write the fraction.
Level 2: Up to eighths
What fraction of the shape is shaded? Write the fraction.
Level 3: Up to twelfths
What fraction of the shape is shaded? Write the fraction.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Halves, thirds and quarters

  1. The bottom number counts all the equal parts. The top number counts the shaded parts.
  2. 3 parts are shaded and 1 is not: 3 + 1 = 4 equal parts.
  3. 3 of the 4 equal parts are shaded, so the fraction is 3/4.

Level 2: Up to eighths

  1. The bottom number counts all the equal parts. The top number counts the shaded parts.
  2. 5 parts are shaded and 3 are not: 5 + 3 = 8 equal parts.
  3. 5 of the 8 equal parts are shaded, so the fraction is 5/8.

Level 3: Up to twelfths

  1. The bottom number counts all the equal parts. The top number counts the shaded parts.
  2. 7 parts are shaded and 5 are not: 7 + 5 = 12 equal parts.
  3. 7 of the 12 equal parts are shaded, so the fraction is 7/12.
