Translation: Sliding a Shape on a Grid
- Grade 5
- Mathematics

A triangle on a plain grid is slid 5 units right and 2 units up: one corner is moved by counting each jump, the other two corners move the same way, and joining the new corners gives the new triangle. Sliding the first triangle onto the new one checks that it fits exactly, with the same size and shape and facing the same way; going 5 left and 2 down brings it back, and the video ends on the recap that a translation slides a shape left or right, then up or down.

What the lesson says
Sliding a shape to a new place is called a translation.
Let us slide this triangle 5 units right and 2 units up.
Start with one corner of the triangle.
Each jump from one grid line to the next is 1 unit.
Count 5 units to the right: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Then count 2 units up: 1, 2.
Move the other two corners the same way, 5 units right and 2 units up.
Join the new corners to make the new triangle.
To check, slide the first triangle 5 units right and 2 units up.
It fits exactly: same size, same shape, and facing the same way.
To slide it back, go 5 units left and 2 units down.
A translation slides a shape left or right, then up or down.
