Flat shapes are sorted by looking only at corners: shapes where straight sides meet go in one group, and shapes that curve all the way round go in the other. Then solid things are sorted by asking only "does it roll?": the ball and the can roll, and the box and the block don't.

What the lesson says

Let's sort these flat shapes into two groups.

We look at just one thing: corners.

A corner is where two straight sides meet.

Two groups: corners, and no corners.

This one has corners, so it goes here.

This one curves all the way round. No corners.

Each shape goes in the group it matches.

Let's check: these have corners, these have none.

Solid shapes can be sorted too.

Now we ask just one thing: does it roll?

The ball rolls, and the can rolls on its side.

The box and the block don't roll.

To sort, look at just one thing.
