A rectangle's inside is shown as its area and the line around it as its perimeter. The video then covers the rectangle with 12 same-size squares, checks the count as 3 rows of 4 (4 + 4 + 4 = 12), and calls each square 1 square centimetre, so the area is 12 square centimetres.

What the lesson says

How much space is inside this rectangle?

The space inside a flat shape is called its area.

The distance all the way around the edge is called the perimeter.

To find the area, we cover the inside with squares.

The squares are all the same size, with no gaps and no overlaps.

Now count the squares, one at a time.

There are 12 squares, so the area is 12 squares.

Let's check: there are 3 rows of 4 squares.

4 plus 4 plus 4 makes 12, so our count is right.

Let's say each square is 1 centimetre on each side.

Then each square is 1 square centimetre, a standard unit.

So the area of this rectangle is 12 square centimetres.

Area is how many squares cover the inside of a shape.
