Pattern, Rhythm, Contrast and Emphasis

Repeating shapes, colours and a zigzag line make a pattern, and an eye hopping from shape to shape leaves beat marks on a line, so the repeats become rhythm that changes when the spaces between shapes change. Big and small, then light and dark, show contrast, and one big, bright circle in a crowd of grey ones shows emphasis, the part your eye goes to first, before a recap of all four ideas.

What the lesson says
What do pattern, rhythm, contrast and emphasis mean in art?
Shapes that repeat make a pattern.
Colours and lines can repeat in a pattern too.
Your eye jumps from shape to shape, like a beat.
Repeats that move your eye along make rhythm.
Change the spaces, and the rhythm changes.
Big and small look very different, so they make contrast.
Light and dark make contrast too.
Here, all the circles look the same.
Use contrast to make one circle big and bright.
Your eye goes to that circle first.
Making one part stand out is called emphasis.
Repeat things for pattern and rhythm, and use contrast for emphasis.
