Grade 3, Patterns and equations
Patterns that grow and shrink
Patterns to 1000 that go up or down, including doubling and halving.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Add or subtract the same number
- Find the pattern. Write the missing numbers.
- Level 2: Doubling and halving
- Each number is double or half the one before it. Write the missing numbers.
- Level 3: Write the rule and the next numbers
- Find the rule. Write the next two numbers and the rule.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Add or subtract the same number
845, 838, 831, 824, 817, 810
- Count back from 845 to 838: that is 7 less. The numbers go down by 7.
- Keep counting back by 7: 838, 831, 824, 817, 810.
Level 2: Doubling and halving
80, 40, 20, 10, 5
- Half of 80 is 40, so each number is half the one before.
- Half of 40 is 20, and half of 10 is 5.
- Check by doubling: 5 + 5 = 10 and 20 + 20 = 40.
Level 3: Write the rule and the next numbers
640, 615, 590, 565, 540, 515 Rule: subtract 25
- The numbers go down. 615 + 25 = 640, so each number is 25 less. The rule is subtract 25.
- Keep subtracting 25: 565, 540, 515.
