Grade 6, Patterns and equations

One-step equations

Solve one-step equations such as 3x = 12 and x + 5 = 11.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Add and subtract
Solve each equation.
Level 2: Multiply and divide
Solve each equation.
Level 3: Mixed
Solve each equation.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Add and subtract

x − 39 = 42 x = 81

  1. Keep both sides balanced: do the same thing to each side.
  2. Add 39 to both sides: x = 42 + 39 = 81.
  3. Check: 81 − 39 = 42.
  4. For 49 − x = 9, add x to both sides: 49 is 9 + x, so x = 49 − 9 = 40.

Level 2: Multiply and divide

7x = 84 x = 12

  1. 7x means 7 × x, so divide both sides by 7: x = 84 ÷ 7 = 12.
  2. Check: 7 × 12 = 84.
  3. For x ÷ 4 = 9, multiply both sides by 4: x = 9 × 4 = 36.

Level 3: Mixed

86 = x − 11 x = 97

  1. The letter is on the right side. Solve it the same way: do the same thing to both sides.
  2. Add 11 to both sides: 86 + 11 = 97, so x = 97.
  3. Check: 97 − 11 = 86.
  4. For 49 − x = 9, add x to both sides: 49 is 9 + x, so x = 49 − 9 = 40.
