Grade 3, Measurement and geometry

Metric units

Change metres to centimetres, and compare lengths, masses and capacities in related units.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Metres and centimetres
Write the missing numbers.
Level 2: Which is more?
Which is more? Write <, > or = in the circle.
Level 3: Metres and centimetres together
Write the missing numbers.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Metres and centimetres

4 m = 400 cm

  1. 1 m = 100 cm.
  2. 4 m is 4 groups of 100 cm: 4 × 100 = 400. So 4 m = 400 cm.
  3. Going back, divide by 100: 400 ÷ 100 = 4, so 400 cm = 4 m.

Level 2: Which is more?

3 m > 250 cm

  1. 1 m = 100 cm. 1 km = 1000 m. 1 L = 1000 mL. 1 kg = 1000 g.
  2. Change the larger unit to the smaller one: 3 × 100 = 300, so 3 m is 300 cm.
  3. Compare: 300 > 250, so 3 m > 250 cm.

Level 3: Metres and centimetres together

4 m 8 cm = 408 cm

  1. 1 m = 100 cm.
  2. Change the metres: 4 × 100 = 400, so 4 m is 400 cm.
  3. Add the centimetres: 400 + 8 = 408. So 4 m 8 cm = 408 cm.
  4. Going back: 507 = 500 + 7, so 507 cm is 5 m 7 cm.
