How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: One item, paid with $100 bills
Cost: $364.75 Paid: $400.00 Change: $35.25
- Count up from the cost to the next dollar: $364.75 + $0.25 = $365.00.
- Count up to the money paid: $365.00 + $35.00 = $400.00.
- Add what you counted: $0.25 + $35.00 = $35.25. The change is $35.25.
Level 2: Two items
Items: $124.95 and $308.50 Paid: $450.00 Total: $433.45 Change: $16.55
- Add the dollars: 124 + 308 = 432. Add the cents: 95¢ + 50¢ = 145¢, which is $1.45.
- Total: $432 + $1.45 = $433.45.
- Count up: $433.45 + $0.55 = $434.00, then $434.00 + $16.00 = $450.00.
- The change is $0.55 + $16.00 = $16.55.
Level 3: Three items, up to $1000
Items: $124.95, $308.50 and $212.35 Paid: $700.00 Total: $645.80 Change: $54.20
- Add the dollars: 124 + 308 + 212 = 644. Add the cents: 95¢ + 50¢ + 35¢ = 180¢.
- 180¢ is $1.80. Total: $644 + $1.80 = $645.80.
- Count up: $645.80 + $0.20 = $646.00, then $646.00 + $54.00 = $700.00.
- The change is $0.20 + $54.00 = $54.20.
