How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Paid with $5 or $10
Cost: $3.65 Paid: $5.00 Change: $1.35
- Count up from the cost to the next dollar: $3.65 + $0.35 = $4.00.
- Count up to the money paid: $4.00 + $1.00 = $5.00.
- Add what you counted: $0.35 + $1.00 = $1.35. The change is $1.35.
Level 2: Paid with $20, $50 or $100
Cost: $12.85 Paid: $20.00 Change: $7.15
- Count up from the cost to the next dollar: $12.85 + $0.15 = $13.00.
- Count up to the money paid: $13.00 + $7.00 = $20.00.
- Add what you counted: $0.15 + $7.00 = $7.15. The change is $7.15.
Level 3: Two items, then change
Items: $24.95 and $38.50 Paid: $100.00 Total: $63.45 Change: $36.55
- Add the dollars: 24 + 38 = 62. Add the cents: 95¢ + 50¢ = 145¢, which is $1.45.
- Total: $62 + $1.45 = $63.45.
- Count up: $63.45 + $0.55 = $64.00, then $64.00 + $36.00 = $100.00.
- The change is $0.55 + $36.00 = $36.55.
