Grade 6, Operations

Least common multiple

Find the least common multiple of two numbers by listing their multiples.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Numbers to 15
Find the least common multiple (LCM). List the multiples of each number to help.
Level 2: Numbers to 20
Find the least common multiple (LCM). List the multiples of each number to help.
Level 3: Numbers to 25
Find the least common multiple (LCM). List multiples of the larger number until one divides evenly by the smaller number.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Numbers to 15

LCM of 6 and 8 = 24

  1. Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30.
  2. Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32.
  3. The smallest number in both lists is 24.

Level 2: Numbers to 20

LCM of 12 and 15 = 60

  1. Multiples of 12: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72.
  2. Multiples of 15: 15, 30, 45, 60, 75.
  3. The smallest number in both lists is 60.

Level 3: Numbers to 25

LCM of 15 and 18 = 90

  1. List multiples of the larger number: 18, 36, 54, 72, 90.
  2. Test each with 15: 18, 36, 54 and 72 leave a remainder, but 90 ÷ 15 = 6.
  3. So the LCM of 15 and 18 is 90.
