Grade 1, Number sense

Equal or not equal

Decide if both sides are the same amount, and write = or ≠.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Sums to 10
Do both sides make the same amount? Write = or ≠ in the circle.
Level 2: Add and subtract to 20
Do both sides make the same amount? Write = or ≠ in the circle.
Level 3: A sum on each side
Do both sides make the same amount? Write = or ≠ in the circle.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Sums to 10

2 + 3 ≠ 6

  1. Work out the left side: 2 + 3 = 5.
  2. Compare it with the right side: 5 ≠ 6. Write ≠.

Level 2: Add and subtract to 20

9 − 4 = 5

  1. Work out the left side: 9 − 4 = 5.
  2. The right side is 5 too: 5 = 5. Write =.

Level 3: A sum on each side

2 + 3 ≠ 4 + 2

  1. Work out the left side: 2 + 3 = 5.
  2. Work out the right side: 4 + 2 = 6.
  3. 5 ≠ 6, so write ≠.
