Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Two kinds, up to 5 coins

  1. Start with the coin worth the most. A quarter is 25¢.
  2. Add 10¢ for each dime: 25 + 10 = 35, then 35 + 10 = 45.
  3. The coins make 45¢.

Level 2: Three kinds, up to 7 coins

  1. Start with the coin worth the most. A quarter is 25¢.
  2. Add 10¢ for each dime: 25 + 10 = 35, then 35 + 10 = 45.
  3. Add 5¢ for each nickel: 45 + 5 = 50, then 50 + 5 = 55. The coins make 55¢.

Level 3: Up to 9 coins, mixed up

  1. Sort the coins first: quarters, then dimes, then nickels.
  2. Quarters: 25 + 25 = 50.
  3. Dimes: 50 + 10 = 60, then 60 + 10 = 70.
  4. Nickels: 70 + 5 = 75, then 75 + 5 = 80. The coins make 80¢.
