A simple map of Canada fills in one resource at a time, each with its own symbol and a line in the map key: forests across the country, fish off the west and east coasts, minerals in the Canadian Shield around Hudson Bay, farmland on the prairies, fresh water in lakes and rivers, and energy from western oil and gas and from dams on rivers. It ends by lighting up each resource where it is found, and the recap that different places in Canada give us different natural resources.

What the lesson says

What natural resources does Canada have, and where are they found?

Natural resources are useful things we get from nature.

Canada has an ocean on three sides: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic.

A wide belt of forest stretches across the country.

Fish are caught in the oceans off the west and east coasts.

Around Hudson Bay is the Canadian Shield, a huge area of very old rock.

The Shield's old rocks are rich in minerals.

The flat prairies have rich soil and lots of farmland.

Canada has lots of fresh water, in many lakes and rivers.

Energy comes from oil and natural gas, found mostly in the west.

Dams on rivers also use moving water to make electricity.

So Canada has forests, fish, minerals, farmland, fresh water and energy.

Different places in Canada give us different natural resources.
